Three top teams from last season, Simba, Young Africans and Azam kicked off the Vodacom Premiership title chase on high as they registered wins in the opening day of the league.
For the three newly promoted teams, Police Dodoma, Arusha FC and Ruvu Shooting received a warning note after losing their openers.
Defending champions Simba SC won 2-0 through new recruit Amir Maftah against African Lyon at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam as last season runner up Young Africans got a 1-0 triumph against Police Dodoma at Jamhuri Stadium in Dodoma, thanks to striker Jerson Tegete.
In Arusha, a brace from striker John Bocco were enough to send a strong message to premier teams that Azam FC have a clear intent to fight at fore front for top national honour as they punished their hosts Arusha FC 2-0 at Sheikh Amri Abeid Stadium.
Azam under the tutorage of Brazilian Itamar Amorim fielded a strong squad with new signing last season best player Mrisho Ngasa, Rwandese defender Mutesa Mafisango and striker Peter Senyonjo from Uganda on starting line up.
He also included other Tanzania national team players such as Aggrey Morris who was red-carded in the last minute of the game, Erasto Nyoni, Jabir Aziz, John Bocco and Seleman Kassim.
In the goal he opted for Burundian custodian Vladimir Niyonkuru who was substituted at half time after sustaining injury while on the right back he had Kenya international Ibrahim Shikanda. In the starting 11 Itamar had also new signing Ramadhan Chombo from Simba.
Elsewhere, Majimaji beaten by 1999 and 2000 premiership winners Mtibwa Sugar by 1-0, Kagera Sugar lost 1-0 at home in Bukoba against JKT Ruvu, where as last season relegation survivors Toto Africa won 2-0 against Ruvu Shooting to give hope to home fans at Kirumba Stadium in Mwanza
